My entry to the NEC cake showm - didn't win anything, probably aged me 20 years doing it and getting it there - plus watching everyone charge past it with handbags etc. swinging about! Was it worth it - probably not, you were right!

Gosh Emma, you should have stolen the show! It's an amazing piece of work. How did you do the ball on the top?

I second that..wow....as always the colours are so bright..how do you get yr colours like that do you cover with paste and then paint on extra colour..... and yes the ball how on earth did you do the ball....and is it pastillage.... Also the blue on the cake is beautiful can i ask how you got that blue and what colur and brand because that could be very handy for my daughters cake for undersea when I eventually decide what to do..

The colours are normal paste colours mized with lustre dust (quite a lot of it!) - I think the blue was a royal blue mixed with either a pale blue or a white lustre - the green is gooseberry with a gold lustre dust etc. Then I paint them over with confectioner's glaze.

Oh - the ball. I made up some pastillage and formed it around a spherical cake tin, cut out some circles and left to dry for ages before sticking it with royal icing and smoothing with a wet paintbrush.

My three latest cakes - all done as Christmas cakes for family. My first attempts at making bows, learnt a lot! Also my beloved mexican modelling paste let me down for the first time ever - I just couldn't get it to dry, so I'm back to pastillage!
Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you're all having a short break from cake making for a while. My next one is in February - my sister's wedding cake. Then two booked for Easter weekend. How's it all going for you?

Strange I had probs with my pastillage before xmas when I was doing the cinderella shoe..dont understans why but it eventually dried but I was worried the first one collasped but the second got there in the end..maybe it was the wet weather....My next one is my daughter birthday in Jan still havent decided what to do.....thinking a stacked cake for impact though with a mermaid etc on the top and pearls..but who knows..lol..

Sorry I've been away for a while. We've had a terrible Christmas - one friend killed herself and another died from cancer. However, Spring is in the air and on Saturday my sister got married. Here's the cake I did for it.
I love all the cakes you chaps have been doing while I've been away and I'm sorry I've missed all your chatting - only now feeling ready to put myself back in the world!

Emma
Sorry to hear your news, but glad you're getting a bit back to normal. Love the wedding cake. The divider really suits the style - and the ribbon. Well done again.
