Here's my latest. A massive lighthouse cake - each tier is two cakes high and the lighthouse is 35cm high so it was massive. Very disappointingly I'd dowelled it badly and you can see it's started to tilt, the back of the bottom tier started to bulge out and the fondant cracked a bit, but hopefully no-one minded too much. The bride and groom were (hopefully still are!) friends so only paid for ingredients.

Wow Emma! It's totally different to how I imagined. I think it's lovely, really impressive.

I don't get a newsletter either but that will have been because I ticked a box saying I didn't want one - I'm sure you must be able to 'opt in' should you now want one.
On the contest gallery thing I definitely come fourth as the other three have more votes than me - unless teaching year 6 maths had befuddled my brains so much that I've forgotten what order numbers come in! (wouldn't be suprised actually...)

I've posted this entry on cake central but I'd really value your opinions too as you're all UK based and know what show I'm talking about! I'm thinking of entering the Birmingham sugar show cake competition - this is the biggest annual sugar event in the UK. I'm definitely going to the show and would like to have a crack at entering the wedding cake competition but I've never done a competition before. I've been decorating a year now. I'm worried that my cake will look duff compared to everyone elses or that I'll commit a dreadful sugar faux pax.
From where I stand it looks like all the judges are elderly ladies who have a penchant for fiddly royal icing collars and very faffy nonsense which I don't go in for. Am I wrong? Last year the show had some stunning cakes in, but none of them won, the fiddly fussy cakes won. Should I spend a solid week of my life making a cake that they might just sniff at? I have half term coming up (I'm a teacher) so should I spend it relaxing instead? What's in it for me? I'd love to hear your competition entry experiences and receive some help deciding, my brain is in such a muddle about it!

Lol Emma! I'm also not into those fiddly fussy collared type cakes. You may be right but I'm not sure. I always think that whatever competition I enter, be it cakes or otherwise, the judges will choose someone elses. I've never seen the cakes at the Birmingham shows so I can't say what they'll be looking for, but if those are the types of cakes that normally win, then if I were you, I wouldn't bother. It's so time consuming and with so much effort involved, I would only enter if I really thought I had a chance of winning. I'm not talking about your cakes though because they're brilliant, I mean the type of cakes they look for.
