Hi Chrissy,
Are you frilling your petals with a ball tool?
I think the cone should be a bit shorter with a pointier top.
i have seen in the cake magazines that when using the single cutters, you need different sizes. i'm not sure about the first layer but with the second layer of petals, try putting the first petal on and then slide another petal in front of the first one so that the second petal is touching the cone . then try the next one, sliding half of that petal in front of the previous one. because of the 5 petal cutter, i use 5 petals this way. Then for the third layer, glue the base of one petal onto the rose. And instead of placing the next petal inside, let it overlap the outside of the first petal. Place the third petal so that it's underneath the other side of the second petal. Sorry if that's confusing!! Basically, on the third layer (usually my last one) the whole petal should either be underneath the two next to it, or overlapping.
I failed miserably on my first 2 attempts!
Your purple one's look lovely though. I like the colour.

Thanks all.......... rach thankyou i am a bit disheartened but refuse to give up, lol. my mum's fault she wants lilac flowers on her mother's day cake so i need to get it right for then, fingers crossed anyway. i feel my cone is wrong, one book shows a pic with a slim cone, the other a fat bottomed one. so i am trying different shapes. One thing i am definately wrong about is the ball tool........... i am doing it round the edge?? hopefully the correct way as you told me rolling it around the middle will make the petals less stiff. i have another 3 cones drying now, so will try again tomorrow. Hopefully using different sizes in cutter i can get rid of the tiered effect........ thanks for your help as always.

Hi shianne, yes i am using the ball tool but thought i read in the book to run it around the edges....... kindly rach told me to do it in the middle. i have the orchard book 1, flowers mafe easy and for the wired rose they only use one set of cutters. the open rose etc use different sizes, so i will try again, lol. yes i think i know what you mean, after covering the cone, start a row of 3 petals interlocking half each under each petal. then the row or 4 or 5 petals........ that is where i think i went wrong i was still tucking them in each one.......... thankyou for your help i think i need to read some more, but will try again. i am comparing them to some i bought in a spray from ebay. and they look nothing like them, so was a bit dissapointed........

you can also use the ball tool around the edge of the petal again to loosen the whole thing up and frill it slightly again gives a more natural look......
We are all still learning so dont worry..sometimes mine look nice other times they are okay.......sometimes I wrap the petals sometimes i tuck..never get 100% right...but as long as it looks good it doesnt matter if its not done 100% correctly......
Once into a bouquet they always look better....if you want a close of some of my roses give me your email and I will send you some..again they are not brill but they might help
