I was panicking a bit, but they came off without having to freeze, or bake in the oven...brilliantly easy...used Nicki at cake finishing touches on ebay...very good.

have to say the course just isn't the same...the girls who have gone from level 1 to level 2 at the college are not very friendly or helpful and are certainly VERY serious...we used to have a bit of a laugh at our old college...and everyone shared equipment and ideas....these new girls are very territorial!
apart from that though, we have been learning pressure piping, which i quite like, and this week we are doing runout collars and motifs...which means coating a board with royal icing....aargggggggghhhhhhh...something i'm not very good at!

here's my latest 2...James Bond cake...the 007 and man figure are run outs and this one is a golden wedding anniversary for a couple who like holidays and playing dominoes (what a combination to try to get on a cake)

you need to have a good strong solution of royal icing (450g icing sugar, 18g meriwhite, 65mls water)...pipe your outline in number 1 tube then let the icing down with a bit of water until it runs but still holds a bit...i always drop a bit in then if it disappears in a count of 5 seconds then it's okay...fill in the outline then I put it under a lamp (angle poise desk lamp with a spotlight bulb), this helps it dry a bit, but is more to give it a shine...I then leave them a day or so in a dry room (not kitchen) and they are fine...if they are done properly they have a sparkly shine on the top, but the underside are shiny like it has been polished.

They are great love the run outs never tried them but would like to have a go. Think your parasol is great how did you do that and get it to stand?

umbrella was done with flower wire - taped 6 together part way up then splayed them out at the top and just draped a circle of flower paste over it and left it to stand in a cup over night...then just piped some decoration...miles easier than i expected...
run outs are really good...i would have struggled to do those motifs in sugarpaste as they would have gone all out of shape when i picked them up off the board...can also keep them too if they manage to get them off the cake without snapping them!
