I agree I prefer the longer wires....typical I change the cake so the cake is much bigger then change the wires when I should have kept them longer..but if you dont try......
I find it diffcult to come up with ideas....I can adapt someones else design but still find it difficult to come up eith something myself...I also find that with my face painting...I forget what shoulf go on the face and when I think I have finished remember I should have put something else on oh well that will all come with time..I hope..

You can give it a try...you wont be able to get the really wafer thin paste with it but you will be able to get the idea......you could make thicker ones..but really I would buy some Squires kitchen paste for only £3.50 a packet and it goes a long way..
If you want to make your own paste here is the recipe but I never do it...always buy it... 500g icing sugar 1 sheet leaf gelatine 10ml (2 tsp) white vegaetable fat 10ml (2 tsp) liquid glucose 5ml (1 tsp) gum tragacanth 20ml (4 tsp) CMC ( carboxymethyl cellulose) 1 -1 and a quarter medium egg whites
1/ put icing sugar in a heatproof bowl covering the surface closely with greaseproof paper to prevent formation of crust.Warm in oven 150 C /300 F 2/ soak gelatine in bowl of water for 5 mins..remove gelatine from water and place in a bowl with fat and glucose...stand over hot bowl of water until dissolved. 3/ mix warmed icing with the gum trag and CMC.......add egg white with the gelatine begin mixing on slow speed.. increase mixer speed and beat until paste is white and piable adding more egg in necessary.. 4/ store in a clean bag in an air tight container for 24 hours before use.....
hope that helps

;D thanks Rach!
To be honest, i don't have the time to make it myself but i'll keep that recipe in case i need some and don't have any of the ready made available. I have bought some paste but even with that, it's finding the time. I suppose i would need to dust the flowers with coloured powder before i wrap them up?

No you dont need to the yellow roses on here I dusted after they where dry with blossom tint...you get that lovely edge on them then......and then once you have dusted them pass them through the steam of a kettle after it has boiled to get a beautiful sheen and it also seals in the colour..FAB

thanks for the tip, i'll definitely give it a try! one more thing if you don't mind, i'm trying to paint some edible lustre onto some stars made out of sugarpaste but it just doesn't seem to go on that nicely. i'm left with little patchy bits. i've mixed the lustre with a bit of alcohol as i don't have any rejuvinator spirit. do you need to give it 2 coats? the other question, is when would you use the dust dry? i've tried on both wet and dry sugarpaste and it doesnt come up brightly enough.
Thanks for all your help!

okay it depends on what colour you are using and on what colour paste........ie the princess castle cake I use a dark pink paste and dry dust on quite generously the pink shimmer and that is while the icing is still piable.... Another example is the mermaid I used the moonbeams dusts on those and thay always come up better on a darker paste aswell..
I find it is better to colour on wet paste as it holds the colour better again on the drapes of the doll cakes the paste was cut and coloured before draping..
With the parcel cakes I let them dry first and then used squires kitchen gildesol which you paint on first then put the shimmer on top it holds the colour for you..but sometimes I dont like the effect soo much it gived a more solid looking colour but I dont tend to use it much..... I do find though it is best to dust before the paste hardens otherwise you will need to use the gildesol ....the stars in the parcel cake where again dusted on the wet paste then put on the wire and left to dry and they had a nice finish....
If you are mixing it can be a bit patchy sometimes maybe it might be too thick cos it does evaporate quickly I need to keep diluting mine when I use it..Have a look at the crystal wedding cake used a double cream lustre on that with rejuv spirit as I wanted a more solid looking effect only did one coat on those and when it dries gives a good sheen.....
Give it another try and let me know how you get on....it should go on okay...... One last tip is when I do my princess turrets the paste is used with a sugar shaper which to use paste in that it is mixed with trex to make it more piable to get throught whatever shape disc you are using....that is great as you can put your dry dust straight onto that and it holds like a dream as the trex is holding it all together..have a look again at the turrets it has a fab shimmer....dark paste with trex pink shimmer on top.....
Hope that helps

re: using lustre dusts. I had the same problem you're having when using them - they didn't seem bright enough. I then found that you have to mix quite a lot of of the dust in with a tiny drop of vodka (or whatever medium you're using to mix) It needs to be pretty thick to get good strong colour. You can use it thin to paint over something for a tiny hint of shimmer.

Yes I forgot to mention that you do need alot of dust in a small amount of liquid that why it does goes very thick so when it evaporates you need to add abit more liquid.... I dont think I made that as clear as I should have done..thanks emma
Also look at the crystal wedding cake used snowflake lustre and double cream bridal satin on the cake board with a texture fabric rolling pin..that made a lovely finish both where applied to the icing while it was still setting and gave a nice sheen...

Hi everyone, Here's a little 6 inch cake i've just finished. Couldn't have done it without the book i won last night i must say! Used the lustre dusts on the cake itself and on the snowman. They look really good.
