Hi, I have just had a query about making 150 individual figures to represent each wedding guest. EEEEEEK! What an opportunity though! She's battling to find anyone who would do it because it's such a big task. She's only getting married in 2008 but would also give me the order for her main wedding cake if I made the figures. So, how much would you charge for each figure then? A well known wedding make maker in Wales charges 70 pounds per wedding couple topper made of sugar. Would love to know what you all think.

My word.....that is a task ..especailly as they have to represent each guest alot of work involved..I think you would need to base it on how long each figure would take to make and would you make em out of sugerpaste etc......i hate to think wot to charge ......

If I wereyou I'd make a few figures before accepting the order so you can work out how long they take you. You don't want to charge her an amount and then find out they're taking you hours and hours. Does she want fimo or sugar figures? Look into 'small figure' moulds that you can add hair etc. to to personalise - or even think about making your own small figure mould to cut down on time. I think it sounds really exciting - I'd be well up for it!

I AM really excited. It's such a big order, and a great challenge. She wants sugar figures. I'd never do fimo one's again because the dough is so hard to soften. I'd have to make it with sugar paste strengthened with gum trag or something like that (that's what Lindy Smith apparently uses). It is certainly going to be a hefty charge. 15 pounds (maybe 12.50) at least for each figure. They must be quite well off so I think I'll try and test the waters a bit first and see how much she's willing to spend.
If I started making them a year in advance, I would have to make 3 a week!

I think you should say that to her when you're quoting your price - perhaps if she realises three a week for a year is a LOT of your time, she will be more understanding about the cost. You will be sick of the sight of them by the end of that year! Can't wait to hear how you get on!

Well I've written to her so just waiting for a reply. I also thought about mentioning 3 a week for a year but of course only thought about that after i'd sent it. She's quite desperate because everyone she's asked so far has said no. Just have to wait and see!

wow what a lot of modelling, but a great opportunity like you said, hope everything works out for you, and it is a lot of work......... but i think as long as you are not rushed and have plenty of time i am sure things will work out, let us know when she gets back to you.

What a challenge - personally I wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole. Much as I love making figures when are you going to get a chance to make anything else and remember holidays and sick-days etc. Having said that, I'd go for a one-size-fits-all model with only changes to hair and face colours if necessary. Why don't you make the bridal party first and see if she'd settle for that? I would say at least £15 each - if she can afford that she can probably well afford more - if that's too expensive, she isn't in that league and should back off a bit. How about individual cakes with little people on them for each guest with their names iced? If you are going for the individual figures, get a production line going with all the bodies and heads made with just the hair and features to put on. That way you'll speed up a lot rather than mess about with each individual one.

PS sorry I haven't been around, but Mum is seriously ill and I'm feeling a bit stressed at the moment.

Hi Chrissy and Marjorie
It would be a lot of work but I feel I shouldn't miss out because of the money. We desperately need it. I'd have to go with the one-size-fits-all Marjorie as it would definitely be the quickest. She hasn't replied yet so maybe I'll email her and give her a price of 15 pounds for each figure. The cost of materials would be minimal, so it's really just my time. I can do more when I don't have any orders and that would mean I could hopefully do less when I get loads of orders.
I'll let you know what she says IF she replies.
