Thanks for the compliment Shianne. The cushion cake; I made two square cakes for each cushion and carved each to form the top or bottom half of the cushion, I then sandwiched them together with jam and buttercream. I can't say it was my idea though - it's one of Colette Peters - although the cushions are my own designs. It took an evening to make all the cakes and a day to decorate them all. I charged £120 for it, although it was half what I'd normally charge as it was for a work colleague and she was taking it to a very big party so I thought it would be good for a lot of people to see my work.

Well that would have wowed them all! Where do you live again? It's great to be able to charge so much for them. I live near Cardiff and in the area i'm in, i certainly wouldn't be able to charge even 120 pounds for that kind of cake. Well done anyway!

Thanks chaps. I live in Devon. I used to live in Cardiff so I know the area you're from. If you promoted yourself in Cardiff you ought to be able to charge full price for cakes like that - there'sd a lot of money sloshing about in Cardiff itself so I'd aim for there if I were you. I sell my cakes in a very rural area mostly and a few in Exeter.

I had each cake layer supported with doweling and then one long dowel pushed through the whole cake. The gold is edable art;'s 'golden ginger' and it's the best gold I've found by a long shot - it's just glorious!

I mixed the gold with rejuvenator spirit as suggested as it was perfect - odd because all the other lustres I have mix perfectly well with vodka.
I have been cake decorating since October 2005 - so not that long, but I've always done a lot of arty things like pottery, painting, jewellery making etc. so really I've been doing arty things for years and years.
For the modelling bits I use squires mexican modelling paste - I LOVE it, it's the only stuff that I can get to hold the shapes I want it to. It takes a while to dry, but it's well worth it, it's very smooth so you never get cracks in it like I seem to with other stuff.
Thanks for the nice comments about the cakes. I'm making a cake soon for a competition run by Devon Library Services. They are running a comp for children to design a cake and I've been asked to help choose the winning design and also to make it. I am a teacher and the woman who runs the promotions at the libraries was the mum of someone I taught - so a lucky connection!
