hi My name is Nikki and I'm new to this site. I've been making cakes for family for about 5 years and just recently for friends. I've been asked to make a two tier'd christening cake for my future godson but I've never done one before!! Could anyone tell me if I need to put a thin cake board under the top cake before placing it over the bottom cake. The bottom cake is a Rich Fruit cake and the top is Madeira. Sorry if this is a daft question but I am self taught!! Many thanks. Nikki P.S. I've taken a look at some of the cakes you have all made....they are fantastic.

Nikki, I would definitely put at least a 3mm board under the top cake, if nothing else it will stop the icing on the bottom cake going soggy (I used full size cake drums on the tiered wedding cake I recently did to gain additional height) and I would probably also dowell the bottom cake just to be on the safe side, although I would imagine that a fruit cake will probably hold a madeira cake okay, perhaps one of the more experienced ladies can help with that...

HI and welcome Nikki ..yes deff board your tiered cakes..you can dowel if you want to for extra support but I think the fruit cake with maderia on top would be okay but dowels are cheap enough and if its done it saves the worry of wot if......
