What is the best way to cover spherical cakes and keep them spherical? I tried and though the covering was not too dreadful, found that the bottom went flat when drying it. Also because of the sugarpaste still being soft, the two halves of the (fruit cake) sphere gradually slid apart a bit so I got a wonky egg shape. Partially solved the problem by putting it in a round bowl and rolled it round every few minutes for several hours, but it still wasn't hard enough to stay in shape. There must be a more professional way! Putting it on a stick wouldn't have worked either as the weight would have been too much. I may not be able to check this site and respond for a couple of days but thank-you in advance to anyone who has any advice. Diane

hi diane, i haven't made one but if i am to do one i would cover each half separately, leave to dry a bit b4 adding dowels and sticking them together.

Foeget that, when i was at work today thought about it and thought it wud not look ok. So i say sandwich together and put it on the covered coard, either marzipan or butercream it first. If using buttercream try not to put too much, you only need a bit so the paste sticks to the cake and it will also get rid of crumbs. And thern cover the whole thing in one go. Use fingers to smmoth in place.

Since no one else is coming up with any ore suggestions here goes:
Debbie Brown's MAGICAL Cakes says about covering a spherical cake, "Roll out and cover the cake. Pull up a pleat and cut away excess without cutting away too much. Pinch the join together and rub with icing sugar to remove. Smooth around the shape and trim" Best of luck!

Thanks for all the above advice, Nauseen. I guess it is just one of those things that you learn from experience (sigh).

they are really difficult to do..well for me anyway thats why I tend to do half ball ones..lol...the way Debbie brown suggests is the best way but the thing is to try and stop it rolling so maybe slice a little off the base so it will stand better....good luck the first one is always the hardest..if all else fails do a half one
