Hi All, I've just bought a sugar shaper from Alison's shop (Thanks Alison) does anyone have any tips on how to use it. Can I use plain sugar paste in it? Julie

Hi julie, yes you can, use it for grass, hair, bricks etc... as lindy smith puts it: The secret to using one successfully is to make sure the paste used is really soft. I find that adding cooled boiled water to the paste until it is just starting to stick to my hands ensures that the paste will be quickly and easily be extruded. If the shaper clicks your paste is still too hard!

they are worth every penny..really they are..wouldnt be without them...I use them on all my novelty cakes for the fine black lines say on minnie mouse cake..to the rope effect to finish all the cakes off.....I dont use them for all their different functions cos there are loads but I use them for wot I need...
For me they are essential ..

I've just bought a sugar shaper and adore it. I also think they're too expensive so I bought it as a clay gun off ebay for £6.00 plus £2.00 p+p - it's the same thing its just that being cake decoarting equipment is license to stick an extra tenner on to it. It has 19 different shape discs and is really excellent - I heartily recommend it and you can svae the money you'd have spent on one called a 'sugar shaper' on a nice bar of choccie.
The title of it in ebay is: POTTERY TOOLS (QUALITY-CLAY-GUN WITH 19-DIES )GREAT-BUY
I use normal icing fondant and mix it with a bit of water until it's a little sticky and it works beautifully - my favourite tool so far definitely.

Maybe it wasn't clay residue - as that would be very pale grey and powdery - sounds more like it was oil or something they'd used to clean it out with. Mine was new and pristine - sounds like you were very unlucky.
The discs you place in the end of the shaper and seqqueze the paste through them using the plunger. The sugarpaste them comes out in a long worm the shape of the disc - ie for the flat disc it comes out like a ribbon. The best thing to do is try them all out and see which effects you like best - good luck.

Have just taken mine out and looked at it. on the inside it is very rough looking and when I put a cloth into it a rusty dust came out of it. Tried washing it and dried it inside but the cloth was still coming out with black bits on. Was this how yours was.? Do you think it will be ok to use.?

hi brenda, sounds like my problem, luckily i managed toget rid of it, will save up to get the real one, i think they look like dinky little toy compared to the other one, plus it'll be easier to squeeze out the paste in one go with the other one..
