Nowhere near me seems to do any cake decorating / sugarcraft courses apart from really basic 'how to ice a cake' stuff. Have any of you attended a course or have any to recommend?

Shianne and I both attended similar courses run at local colleges (at opposite ends of the country) and they should also be running them somewhere in deepest Devon, however, the syllabus can be very strict in what they can show you as it sticks very closely to 'traditional' methods of cake decoration in royal icing and sugarpaste, although it is a good basic course. Our teacher was very good and open to new suggestions and ways of working and we actually learned a lot from each other so I would recommend it even though it may not suit your style of decoration.

There's nothing running within a 20 mile radius of me apart from a really basic beginners one. I'd be happy to learn the more 'traditional' skills as I can then adapt them to what I want to do. I'll keep an eye out, but it's not looking good.

My other suggestion would be to contact the British Sugarcraft Guild for a group near you. I went to one near me and they do seem to stick to traditional or old-fashioned skills - a bit Women's Institutie-type - but perhaps they could advise. Apart from that, the three books by the International School of Sugarcraft are excellent although pricey.
