I have had two cheeky wedding cake asks from people and I wondered if they were typical? I had one lady wanting me to make a three tiered sponge cake for her, iced plainly so she could decorate it. She wanted it couriered to Nottingham (I live in Devon) and she thought about £50 ought to do it. The second lady liked my web-site and loved a wedding cake I had done, but thought it was a bit pricey so she bought M+S cakes and wanted me to come over and decorate them for her. She thought this wouldn't cost much at all - as obviously creating one hundred roses and positioning them probably only takes about half an hour. I told both ladies, politely, to poke off. Do you guys have this happen too?

Not to me, but then again only today did I get my first wedding cake order!
I can understand the lady buying the cakes from M & S but then she must bring it to your house, not you go to hers. In saying that though I would also tell her to poke off if she thought it wouldn't cost much! You'd have to put the cakes on boards, possibly stack them and then still make the roses!!
And well, about the one who wants it couriered and made for 50 pounds is out of her mind! The courier alone would be about that!

I thought it was really cheeky buying someone elses cakes and expecting me to decorate them. It's so tight. I wouldn't buy clothes from Tescos and then expect someone else to sew their label in them. Also from my business point of view what if the cakes are dry and people think they're mine, or what if everyone thinks it's a jolly good idea and then I get less business? Or what if the icing M+S use is cheap and tastes nasty.
I'm just happy taking things really slowly and being a bit stubborn about my business rather than happily taking anything and then realising I'm stuck making hedgehog brides and grooms.

Wot a cheek.........
I did have a lady call up saying she has made the cake but run outta time and would I decorate...First you dont know what the cake is like could be awful and burnt take you three times as long to fix it..then to put all your work onto it and then people love the work then taste the cake..NO way .....
Some people do have a cheek but maybe someone might do it but not you and me...

lol Emma! I see what you mean, in case the cake is dry and tastes terrible but i still wouldn't mind decorating it because if someone asked about the cake, i'm sure they'd say that it was bought by them and decorated by someone else. It just gives people a cheaper option because not everyone can afford a big wedding. But that of course is your choice because it's your reputation. I would still expect them to bring the cake to me and I would still charge the same amount for decorating as i would with another cake. I must add that i certainly wouldnt decorate a cake someone else had baked at home. Oh I don't know!! It's never happened to me yet.
