Rach - you mentioned on the chocolate thread (?!) that you had registered your business and insured it. I have been meaning to do this whilst I've been setting up, but as I havent sold a cake yet I don't think I'm breaking the law at the moment anyway I went to the Inland Revenue homepage and read lots of things but am still totally baffled. I managed to work out that I didn't need to register for VAT as I don't think I'll be earning over £60,000 in the year! I have contacted my local authority about registering my house as a food premisis - actually I did this a month ago but they haven't responded - it's quite laid back here in Devon! I'm interested in the insurance issue and anything else I might have missed out and I'd be really grateful if you have any tips. I don't fancy being arrested whilst rolling out sugarpaste!

Right next thing you must have product and public liability ..publc for anyone coming to your home to pick a cake and to collect..and product in case there is something found in the cake..I am sure there wouldnt be but ..you never know...or if someone gets ill from eating your cake...I know its very unlikey but you need to have this to cover yourself....
I use Blackfriars you can find them on the interent and apply throught the internet..I am a face painter aswell....so got a combined insurance for bothe cake and facepainting for £68.00 a year very goo d price..the cheapest around I found
Thats it really if you need business cards a good company to use is vistaprint they do free business cards..get 250 cards for free onl;y pay P+P fab....I use those
Hope that helps
Anything else you need just shout..

Hi Tinkerbell The tax man isn't anywhere near as scarey as some people like you to believe! The actual registering take less than 10 minutes. The only down side is keeping every single receipt ingoing and outgoing for your end of years

Dear Rach - thanks for your help on this one, I will do all the things you've suggested. I had my first wedding cake order this weekend! She wants a five tiered white chocolate one for next December. I've just had another enquiry for someone who wants a wedding cake that's 'bright and funky' which is exactly what I want to do. Hooray! It's nice having you guys here for a bit of moral support. Are you going to the NEC cake show? Call me Emma - my nickname I put as Tinkerbell as I joined a chat site to ask a question about chickens (we keep them) and I had some pervy emails and I didn't like them using my real name, which I'd given, it worried me, so I used a pseudonym here - but I'm pretty sure you're not going to send me dodgy email ;-)

Hi Emma No not going to NEC would love to though..very jealous........
Its good you are getting wedding cake orders I tend to get childrens cakes only has the crystal wedding cake since I set up business........and they gave me a weeks notice......that was chocolate inside...the white chocolate cake sounds good any ideas of what you are going to do yet.....
Hi Shianne
Thats difficult for I did use to sell a few cakes before I set up to friends and family but as soon as you do business cards and advertising you must register for they can catch you out...I am still going to be under the tax line which is about £4300 before you get taxes..so everything I make I wont get taxed on but I find at the mo I put back what I make in either cake or face painting.......
The tax people are very helpful..no probs there..also you must have insurance there are so many people now to claim over nothing its there to protect you..You must decide if you want to go to the next step it sounds alot but it isnt once yu do it..I am glad I did as now I can give people cards etc and know that I am covered and cant get caught out in any wasy...The next thing I must do is get a separate bank account....and I havent keep all my receipts but then again I am not earning huge amounts..more pocket money but it all helps......

And i will need to look into that insurance thing, but I'm not sure how much the cake business thing is going to go? really well or not? I Love cake making but i'm not a pro, no qualifications, i mean i don't even know how to make a flower from scratch!! Hope to get some help soon. Nauseen

Hi Nauseen
How it was explained to me from the tax office was that as soon as you buy anything in to sell on for a profit you need to register.
If you have only sold the 1 cake they are not going to give you any fines or anything.
People do make the tax office out to be very scarey but if you phone them and explain your situation they do help in every way they can.
My advice would be not to worry and just give them a call. I would think they would say you do not need to register yet but I am no expert - think it would be best to ring.
Hope this helps.
