Afternoon,
I thought it may be a good idea to have a little business section.
Reading the boards it seams quite a few of us have not only made cake decorating our hobby but our business too ;D
If anyone is just starting up and has any business related questions please ask them here and lets see if we can help.

yes you have to contact enviromental health..they come and do an inspection and let u know if your premises are suitable..and if not what changes you can do to make it so..
They must be contacted before you can go into business

Nauseen
You dont have to pay anything extra..you are only a small home business..but call up the council asked to be put through to enviromental health..anyone selling food must be checked by them and given the okay otherwise you could be forced to close down the business if they find you trading without the check..Also once you start trading and u have the okay from tehm..they will come and do a spot check just to make sure the standards are maintained..
They will look at your flooring , wash hand basins..your worktops, oven, ventialtion ie window..where yur washing machine is..if you have pets, anti bacterial spray etc.. Also you must have a fly screen over your window if you have it open when cooking and a nail brush and antibaterial handwash.
Alos a toilet must not be direstly off the kitchen you must have at leat two doors separating the kitchen from the bathroom (toilet) I hope that helps..it sounds alot but most is usually already in place..
If you need anything else just ask..but get them round to do your check..basically a good clean kitchen is what they are after and you have basic understanding of hygiene and cross contamination etc

Does anyone have any hints about giving quotes to friends. I am getting quite a lot of interest in my cakes from people who've seen one (maybe that I've delivered to someone at work etc.) and then want one too. I get really shy about telling them how much what they want would be. For example the receptionist at work wants a cake for her mum's 70th and it needs to feed 80 people. This is going to be quite a big and expensive cake but I can't bring myself to tell her how much as I think she'll think it's too much and then be embarrased to back out. I've asked her to have a look at my web-site to see what kind of cakes I've done and to get an idea of costs - but even now I feel like I have to offer a discount as I work with her. I realise I'm being hopeless - please help! How do you do it?

It all depends how you want to do it.....If you want to get yourself known and get a good reputation you could always do your first few at a reduced rate but make it known to that person not to say to others how much they paid. You could also say its a special rate as you are family or close friend and state that if it was a normal commision the cost would be a great deal higher. For example the crystal wedding cake I did for my sister in laws brother felt very difficult they only gave me a weeks notice and no ideas at all ....so made what I thought they would like..My sister in law was giving as a present to her brother.....so in the end I did what I put above and explained it was a very specail rate for them and not to say the costings to anyone else..I also put it all in writing to her...In the end I charged £100.00 for the cake.......
Hope that helps abit,..but it is soo hard..let me know how you get on..
