Well the cake itself looks as if it is made up of several different shaped cakes cut to the shape you see...maybe a round cake and and a square cut into 2 rectangles at either side...all shaped to the curvy cake shape you see, then its just covered with white sugarpaste coloured with blue in a marble effect (very easy as it doesn't take much kneading in) and the power ranger itself just looks to be made out of red sugarpaste with the black and yellow trim...if you draw the basic shape of the power ranger on greaseproof paper, roll out your red paste and then cut around the template, then add the trim and detail afterwards...so, you need a round and a square tin (or loaf tin), white sugarpaste, red sugarpaste, black sugarpaste (unless you want to colour your own, but easier to buy it pre coloured) yellow royal icing (or you can buy small tubes of supercook coloured icing (http://www.supercook.co.uk/products/decorating-icings/supercook-writing-icing/11225) at asda and tesco, great for small areas of piping and really easy to use as the tube is almost pen like and the nozzle is very small), and a board to put it on. Its difficult from that picture to tell how big the cake is, so no idea what size board you would need - arrange your tins into the shape and measure it that way...sorry if the above goes on a bit...I'm sure you aren't completely clueless really...
alternatively, wilton do a power rangers shaped tin to bake your cake in, but you still have the sugarpaste to deal with...or get an edible image done...no shame in that!

no problem, i'm a bit of a novice too and to be honest, i just give it a go, if it turns out rubbish, i just try again...i had my first baking disaster yesterday, I had no self raising flour so used plain with baking powder, followed the instructions on the packet, but the cake rose all around the edges, but had a big hollow in the middle...so had to make another cake and now slowly munching my way through an 8" madeira...

lol, how you getting along with eating the madeira? I was just wondering where the best place to purchase the sugarpaste from is and what amounts do you reckon I will need?

I buy all my stuff from haveyourcakeandeatit.org because they are reasonable, but mostly because they are close by and I can go and pick the stuff up rather than pay for delivery. I know some of the girls on here buy from sugarshack...not sure if it is .co.uk or .com or whatever, give them a try. You can always get the coloured sugarpaste from Hobbycraft, but it is a bit more expensive there, but then again there is no postage...and the white stuff, just get it from asda / tesco. Make sure any icing colouring you get is paste rather than the liquid stuff if you are planning on colouring yourself as it doesn't make the icing too squishy.
As for amounts, well you'll only need a small packet (i think the smallest is 250g) of the black, maybe a bit more of the red, depends on how big the cake is really...if you don't use it all, give it a coating of trex and wrap it well in cling film and put it in an airtight box and it keeps for ages.
I've decided to make some small individual cakes with the madeira, just to photograph them for the website really
