Hi Emma, You took the second tag instead of the last one and that's why your photo didn't show. It looks great! I don't know if I could have done it. I think I'd be stressing if i ever got an order for one like that. Shianne

Thanks Shianne - I'll remember that for next time.
And thanks Rach, we've both been there with cakes we didn't want to do!
The base cake is two square cakes with the corners cut off to make octagons. Then the top is a cake cooked inside a bowl with a wing of marzipan around it to help make the shape. The doors and windows are rolled pastillage with windows cut out using a craft knife. The pastillage was a bit of a pain as it gets a 'skin' on it so quickly that it makes 'drag' marks where you cut, I think next time I'd have stuck to faithful mexican modelling paste!
On the pastillage I used one of those cutting wheels witha wiggly edge and with a spotty edge to make patterns on the doors, as well as the end of a find piping nozzle to make little circles.
I've used ropes extruded from my clay gun to edge the doors and to go round the roof. The spires are MMP, as usual, fixed on with thingytail sticks and the gorgeous gold colour is 'golden ginger' mixed with rejuvinator spirit.
It looks better lit with tea lights as I've stood the doors out from the cake so when it's lit gently shadows are cast by the winodws which look good.
I'm doing a crazy cake now, on dummies, to see how it goes - will post soon!

Oh my gosh! I've just realised that the computer has automatically changed c*cktail sticks to 'thingytail.' I thought I'd gone mad and went in to modify the post only to have it happen again. Crikey - tempted to see what else I can't type in. boobs

I do like pastillage use it quite abit for castle cakes and seaweed etc...it like any other icing just when you work you have to be quick cos it does skin quickly...but only work on one bit at a time and keep the rest wrapped up and you should be fine

Thanks for your messages everyone. Actually, the woman wasn't over-enthusiastic about it. She said thanks and asked what the damage was - that's it. I find it pretty depressing when some people are pretty blase about their cakes. Anyway - onwards and upwards. Good luck with the fire engine - it's a bit more boxy so should be much more fun!
