Just wanted a quick rant about my Taj Mahal cake. Someone at work wants one for a birthday - they want a 3D model of the Taj Mahal. I said it would cost about £100 and now I'm kicking myself as it's cost about £50-60 in ingredients alone and it's going to take forever. The galling thing is that when I said how much it would cost she looked horrified - does she think I have a convenient Taj Mahal mould that I can just ice?! Not a happy bunny. Wish me luck today as I reckon I'm going to need it.

Oh good luck Emma! That's the part i hate, giving out a price. People really don't know the effort that gets put into a cake, even a little one. At lease once you've done this one, you can put it on your website and after making it, you'll know what you'd like to charge so if you get any further orders, people will know what to expect. I can't wait to see it! Shianne

Thanks Rach and Shianne. I think I'm mostly grouchy about it because it's not the sort of cake I want to do - I never want to make something that is supposed to look like something else, 'making a molehill from someone elses mountain.' It's never going to look as good as the Taj Mahal (obviously!) so it's always going to be disappointing.
I'm waiting for my hens to lay two more eggs so I can bake the last section!

Hope you get on ok with it....... glad it is not me, and as for the price people really don't know how much time and effort goes into the cakes we all make, if they attempted them selves like me, i have paid shop prices in the past you really do not appriciate it.... the decorating really takes a lot of time, good luck i am sure it will look great.looking forward to seeing it.

Well I've done the base now which is two square cakes on top of each other with their corners cut off the make octagons. I've also added to dome, which is a cake cooked in a bowl and shaped with marzipan and icing. I'm not so grouchy about it now as the hard bit is done. Now I've got to add all the detailed features. Thanks for the support - I'll let you know how it goes.

Hey Emma!
Where's the photo of your cake? I've just been to look on your website and i still can't believe how good your cushion cake is. And i've noticed a few more on there too. Are you getting many orders from your site? Are you advertising elsewhere?
I wanted to ask you about the colour of the ivy on the cake with the snail on. It looks like you've painted it on, is that right? What colour did you use for the dark leaves in the centre?
Thanks! Shianne

Shianne - I have two greens, gooseberry and holly green and all my greens are a mixture of these with a navy blue and an egg yellow. I painted on a paler colour first and then brushed over the darker colour. I get a few enquiries from the web-site directly, but they don't usually materialise into an order. However most people who are friends of friends who make an order do so after going to the web-site for a look. I think people who are after a cake get recommened to look at my web-site by friends/neighbours of mine and then contact me to discuss.
I'm trying to sort the Taj Mahal picture, I think there might be something wrong with the cameras memory card - hang on...

I don't know why the photo hasn't appeared above. I hated making this cake, it's not one of my proudest achievements, in fact I cringe when I look at it. I guess everyone has cakes like that. Just glad it's out of the way. I am really going to have to be more firm about not doing cakes that don't appeal to me :-(
