Hi,
Does anyone have any ideas on how to make a palm tree? I thought of pastello for the tree trunk but what about the leaves? And how would i stick them to the tree?
Thanks!

I'm in the middle of doing a mermaid island cake with a palm tree and made the trunk from modelling paste - regalice with tylo added, coloured dk brown & chestnut with a piece of spaghetti down the centre stuck into oasis. Leaves are cut with FMM fern leaf cutter, wired and at the moment just stuck loose into the top of the tree. Still to be finished with dusts and varnish etc. Used a toy as a model and a picture of where I am just now attached. I'm sure she'll look better once she's got hair!

WOW Marjorie!!! That's going to be an amazing cake! I'll be doing Betty Boop sipping a thingytail on an island as the girl the cake is for loves Betty and is having a beach party. I love the way you've done the mermaids tail. It looks like your mould for the lady is really coming in handy. Your palm tree is brilliant, thanks. What will you be using for sand, if any? Some people use crushed wafers but I haven't tried it yet.
What book are you using in the background? :-)

Book is one of Anne Pickard's 'Idiot's Guides' which has a lady sunbathing on an island. Mould is one of the 'family' set - I think PME? Small shells were done with a Makin clay mould but the large shell is a real shell well dusted with cornflour which I just pressed the paste between and this will get propped up behind her head. Paste is the mix of regalice and tylo powder I seem to use for everything now - just adding more tylo when I want a firmer finish. I think I'll try the rice paper leaves as well as they sound nice and will have some movement. To be honest, hadn't actually thought about the sand yet, but the wafers sound interesting - either that or sandy-coloured paste with light brown sugar pressed on? Mermaid's tail was just pressed into with the end of a straw at an angle with the fins cut with a lace cutter but not to happy with the result. Dusted with emerald with a touch of lunar blue and sunflower yellow, then some pearly lustres - I now remember to wear a mask when doing lots of dusting as it flies everywhere!

Lindy Smith also has a book - Storybook cakes I think? which has a mermaid in it but I don't have a copy yet. The Anne Pickard's books have some good ideas, but the instructions are rubbish!

I'm just so glad I don't get asked to do kiddie's cakes as with adults you can be a bit more adventurous and creative!
