I would to make some edible shapes for a cake, similar to lindy smiths christening gift cake, i know rach has made a few like this one......... so hoping someone can help. the book says to use modelling paste? what is this and can you buy it and i presume it is edible..... also my sparkling cake designs book uses mexican paste, this is also for edibles put onto a cake. which are then eaten. which is the best to use please, also i need to make them in different colours and give them a sparkly finish. and can they be made of flower paste but i suppose not as that dries to hard and makes them non edible......... confusing.

Hi Chrissy
I get mine from Ali...its the squires kitchen mexicann modelling pater..it comes in white, flesh, teddy bear brown and pink I think, the white can be coloured to whatever you what and it is edible..the paster once dry can also be painted on with the lustre colours ..like my undersea castle cake..that was mexican pate painted with lustre colours..
I also use sugar dough...which I really like but now you can only get directly from squires kitchen in all the different colours...It comes in a wide range of colours and I used that for my penguin cake all the modelling on their has been done with their coloured pastes...I like like cos they set hard but still edible and they come pre coloured...
Hope that helps
Rach x

very similar to work with but not as elastic as flower paste and it holds it shape well....gives you abit longer to get the shape right

Thanks rach, i have done several shapes, enjoying trying my cutters and i see what you mean about more time, i am finding i have to wait around for it to harden a little before i pick up, i do prefer the flowerpaste of all the one's i have tried. but it is nice to try different pastes. can you tell me i have some mexican paste shapes left over, and they are dusted, how long willl they keep for please and what is the best way to keep them.

I keep stuff made from modelling paste forever! So long as it's kept somewhere dry (just not loads of moist air which can make is bendy) and dust free it will be fine. I keep mine in a tupperware box (with the lid off) and layer it with something like kitchen roll / wadding / tissue etc. sot stop it breaking on contact with another piece. I think flower paste is the same - but I have less experience with this.
