Hi, How often should you feed a fruit cake? And another question, is there anything I can cover cake wire with so I can stick it into the cake without using a floral pick? Would florist tape work? Thanks

I tend to do it once a week ish......
you could cover the wire with florist tape but I still wouldnt insert anything into a cake without a posy pick...its just the risk of cross contamination...i know if you are careful and only just stick into the icing without touching the cake you should be okay but I still prefer not to

Thanks Rach. I was talking to a lady today at the cake dec shop I go to and she said it's to do with the fruit in fruit cakes reacting with the wire. Luckily I did have a posy pick and was able to place the wires in there instead.

yes thats correct...sorry I didnt realise that question was for the fruit cake one aswelll...also when you wrap it up dont wrap it straight with foil as you will get the reaction aswell..you must wrap in greaseproof first and then foil...

You were right the first time Rach, they were 2 separate questions. The wires were for a sponge cake. Luckily I have followed instructions in a book about the fruit cake and covered it in greaseproof paper first. I would have been really annoyed if they'd gone bad!
