well, off on hols to cornwall tomorrow...weather forecast is not good...wish I was off abroad somewhere nice and sunny, but couldn't face it with a 1 year old! Oh well, as long as it doesn't rain it shouldn't be too bad. Then, back and straight into wedding cakes, I've got 2 to do in the next couple of months (this is a lot for me and never done a wedding cake before)

I am off for a month tomorrow (taking my lively toddler and equally lively crawling baby on a 20-hour journey with two flights, on my own....aaarrggh!) so wish you all a good summer, with a bit less rain and more sun than we've had so far, and look forward to joining in again from the end of August. There's a hint in my log-in name.............. We're currently sweltering in Japan - 31 degrees today and VERY humid. Apparenntly flower paste doesn't dry under these conditions, that and lack of ovens and cake/icing ingredients are just two of the reasons I am not making any cakes here despite having my daughter's first and other relative's 75th, 65th and 40th birthdays plus daughter's Shinto baptism whilst we're here. As you can see from the above it is not exactly an exotic holiday, we are all sleeping on the floor in the spare room in my in-law's house and the only sightseeing we've done is to the loca chemist and baby-goods store for essentials. Journey was much better than I expected going on my own with the little ones, but they were up for hours in the night the first few nights. Touch wood for better sleeping today. Diane

that sounds really exciting, i've always wanted to go to the very north of canada - I have a quest to see the northern lights, but my husband doesn't fancy the cold...

Tell him to come to Japan then..........we have just endured the hottest day on record and it hasn't been below 37 daytime or 25 at night for two weeks now! Today was uncomfortable even with air-conditioning on, and we can't go out with the children even for a short walk as it is far too hot . My niece reports continuing heavy rain and a high temp of 16 back in Nottingham - somewhere there is a happy medium. But Julie, it shouldn't be too cold in Canada when you go, you will have a great time.

I also have itchy feet and would love to travel more.
Victoria, you and I both have the same goal then. Seeing the northern lights is one thing I've always said I wanted to do sometime in my life. That and touring northern America.
Diane, I can't even imagine what it must be like in Japan. Probably not like an exotic holiday when you're staying with relatives! How often do you go over?

I went to Iceland a few years ago, apparently the northern lights are very strong every 7 years, so we went when it was a 'peak' year, but it was very cloudy every night, so never saw anything...swimming outdoors in the blue lagoon when it was -5deg was an experience though...Iceland was fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone. When Phoebe is a bit older we might take her to see Father Christmas in Lapland, another good place to see the Northern Lights.

I gather the lagoon wasn't a hot water spring? Brrrrr!
I also want to take the kids to Lapland when they're a bit older. Also Disneyland Paris, can't wait for that!
Sometime though, we've got to go back to South Africa for a holiday so my hubby can see his family. I'm really not looking forward to it because of how unsafe it is. I won't be able to sleep before we go.

yes, it is a hot water spring, don't think i would have been swimming in it if had been cold! It also has some mineral in it which is supposed to be good for the skin, but no-one told me before i went in that it wasn't very good for hair and there I am swimming around piling this white silica gunk all over my face and hair (which was very long at the time) only to find out later that there is noway on earth you can wash it out!!!! My hair was a matted mess for the rest of the holiday! I was wondering why everyone else was wearing swimming caps!!!! It was fantastic though, it was night time when we went and would have been wonderful if we could have seen the lights whilst swimming...
