thats really pretty..well done..you did it...lol..how was the icing on the cakes...mine always rise outta the case too..but if you are icing them say with fondant etc etc..I tip I was given is too press the tops of the cakes down as soon as they come out of the oven and they go flatter...havent really has to do this cos most of mine want the buttercream swirls and glitter..lol

I had lots of cakes left over as I tried putting different levels of mix in, some were too high and some too small, so before I put them in the oven I used the back of a teaspoon and pressed the centres down this seemed to help, I will try pressing the tops down next time

Been really busy so haven't been on much lately, got snowed in today so thought I would get the camera out and download some photos, here are my latest cakes Mr Grumpy for my brother in law who was very grumpy about becoming 40! Hedgehog for my niece Hedgehogs for my daughter, matchmakers are much easier to use than flakes (dont taste as good though) the ballerina was cut using a patchwork cutter

I don't think your piping is rubbish...do you use a nozzle and bag or one of those plastic tube things...?
If i'm piping a name or message, I type it out on the computer in an nice simple font, like eras or tahoma and print it out, not too small, then cut it out and place it on the cake (or board) and take the end of a paintbrush or something and scribe it through onto the paste...then you have something to follow when piping...
also, the best tip for piping anything like lettering or linework (and this will be really difficult to explain without being able to actually show you) is to touch the nozzle down and squeeze, then lift the nozzle up away from the surface and continue to squeeze...if it's a line squeeze and move the nozzle in a line about an inch above the surface and then touch it down at the end of where you want the line...should then be perfectly straight...if lettering do the same but follow the shape of the letter...curves are then smoother...see if you understand that from that description it will be a miracle!
Love the hedgehogs...the little ones are soooo cute...and I hate patchwork cutters...can never get it to stick to the surface...it always gets stuck in the cutter - and I've even had Marion Frost demonstrate in person how to do it!
