if its a mini drum kit I would just use icing and see how it goes...that is what I would try first but it depends how mini it is..i think covering foam on a mini kit might just be abit too fiddly and messy..let us all know how it goes and what you decide to do and dont forget the piccie. I think being asked to do that would worry me abit, good luck.

yes, I'd definitely just use solid icing...unless it is quite big and therefore heavy

well i have finished the drum kit and what i thought was going to be easy was a nightmare cake and i will not be doing another.I found it very heavy in solid icing so i made a hollow big drum and put styrofoam in the hollow and then when the 2 smaller drums went on it was difficult to balance and kept falling backwards.I thought i wonder if a golf tee at the back would suport it better but it looked naf so as i took it out i ripped the icing with it(AAHHH) so i cut another circle of black icing and covered it to disguise the rip then smudged the black colouring on the white icing(aahhh again) then i covered that with black stars so just as i was finished and put my tools away i dropped 200 thingytail sticks all over the floor. Done i thought ill get the ribbon tomorrow and put it in the box.I called for ribbon and spent £2.75 on a metere of sparkley organza ribbon to find when i got home it was a 10" cake and was an 1" short so resorted to plain black which i already had anyway i wasnt pleased with the result so i said to the girl i wouldnt charge so after blood sweat and almost tears here it is(ha ha)

I think it is a perfectly acceptable cake...think the drums look great, especially the cymbals...your icing is smooth and the lettering is good...so what's the problem?
Part of being a good cake decorator is being able to cover any mistakes you make, which you have done brilliantly...and what was she expecting? Most normal people don't even notice the things that we think look terrible so she would have been non the wiser...hope she didn't accept your offer of no charge and paid you properly.

yes she did she was over the moon with it and said her daughter will be thrilled she insisted she pay and thought i was mad that i didnt think it was good enough I think sometimes we want things so perfect and we are very critical of ourselves never mind as long as she was pleased ,and i was glad to see the back of it.lol i have been stressed this week cos ive had 3 to do two sponge and a fruit all for today so i did another kack daniels cake and the one again with the dress and shoes they went like a dream and i finished both in a morning .you just cant believe it can you when such a hassle with that drums.
