yes, i'm very pleased with it...the writing is 3.2.1. linework but you can't really see that in the picture, and it was very difficult to do ( a bit wobbly on the 's'). I got a distinction for it anyway, so really chuffed.

sorry Julie, 3.2.1. linework is where you use a number 3 nozzle then go over it with a number 2 nozzle then go over it again with a number 1 nozzle...the bottom 2 lines of the writing were done in white then overpiped in blue with the number 1. The teacher is always stressing that when you are piping with standard nozzles you have to lift it up and let the icing fall itself with you just giving it a bit of guidance to either do a straight line or curve...it never works for me and it always wants to curve the opposite way to what I want it to go...very frustrating, but its getting better.
Just reread all that and it doesn't make much sense without seeing it done...sorry!

Well done on getting distinction, that's quite rare isn't it? I tried a 4-2 line on he cake for the NEC and that was bad enough, re-did it about ten times.....you must have very steady hands.

Cute! Very well modelled. Yes, I worry too a bit about the amount of colouring when it's for a little one. My cake teacher says she airbrushes white icing if she has a customer who is sensitive to colours, as it uses less colouring overall. (Of course most of us don't have airbrushes, but if you have access to one at college might be worth considering.)

hmmm...it wasn't because of the colouring, i never thought of that! I just don't think coloured paste dries as nicely as white or ivory and i certainly can't get as nice a finish on it

to get a nice finish on the coloured paste just use trex ...rub it all over only a little and buff it abit and you get a beautiful soft sheen all over..and no you cant taste it...lol

yes, you have converted me on trex (actually i use flora white fat as they don't sell trex in our asda)...i use it to roll out on and allsorts...its great for reviving a bit of paste thats dried a little!

Here's a copy of my college piece that I have recreated for a Mother's Day cake for my mum...as the cake is carrot cake, I wasn't able to cover the cake in royal icing, so the covering is sugarpaste but all the decoration is royal icing...bit OTT, but once I start I just can't stop!

I'm really enjoying the course...covering cakes in royal icing is definitely NOT my strong point, but I love doing the piping, its so therapeutic...got a bit of an achy arm and hand this morning though as i did the whole lot in a couple of hours last night!
My mum was thrilled to bits with it and is threatening not to cut it! Waste of good carrot cake that would be
