Very smart cake, the simple ones are more difficult as you have to get the finish really good. Did you use dowels or just stack the cakes? (Asking out of interest because I've never done a wedding cake and dowelling looks terrifying but nearly everything recently published says you need to do it..........) Diane

i dowelled it, would have been gutted if i hadn't and it had collapsed, and they are all different cakes, fruit at the bottom, then carrot cake and then sponge. I haven't dowelled anything before either and was terrified it wouldn't work, but i just marked on where the next cake board was going to go, and put a dowel in the middle and then 4 others around it about half way between the centre and the outside of the next board if you get that...i used long dowels, shoved them in, marked them and then averaged them (as advised in the book) took them out again and sawed them with the junior hacksaw (my husband was histerical at my first attempts with the saw) when i put the next cake on, i just slapped on a bit of royal icing and positioned the cake, much easier than i expected (i did let the icing go rock hard before i put the cake on though) there was a bit of a gap, but that just covered up with the ribbon. It seemed to go really well without much of my usual panic...like I said, very pleased with myself!
The finish isn't perfect, but not too bad. My brother got married a couple of weeks ago, paid £475 for a cake and the finish was absolutely awful, you could see all the finger marks and it had loads of air bubbles in it...i have charged £165 for this cake, which is pretty reasonable, cover all my costs with a little bit left over for me!

my cousing (the bride to be) burst into tears when she saw it...however, I was supposed to make some people models for them dressed in the clothes they were wearing when they met, but I have had several attempts at them and the legs and arms keep breaking, so I've had to tell her I can't do it...gutted and feel like I've let her down, so any tips on people and modelling medium required...I used mexican modelling paste, but mustn't have let it dry long enough. Rach you were right about dressing them, it is really difficult.

they are all sugarpaste and the soil is just dark brown sugar (I often use sugar or shredded coconut to cover the board, coloured with paste colours) - the cake was supposed to be baked in a terracotta flowerpot, but i didn't have one so just used a pudding basin - its a bit rounded but doesn't look too bad...

wedding cake went very well and the delivery was a lot easier than i thought too - i bought a stacked cake box with an insert that fits around the base board so it doesn't move and it fit in my boot a treat - had to drive very slow all the way, so no doubt a few of the men that got stuck behind me had a few choice words to say, but hey ho...I had also done iced cookies as favours, so had a couple of other boxes in the boot to wedge it all in, but it was so heavy i don't think it would have slid around anyway...and dad came with me to carry it into the venue so didn't have to rely on my incredibly weak arms! I brought the box home with me to use again, so the £15 i paid for it wasn't too bad if i get a couple of uses out of it.
