Right..this is my view ........
I have tried to make it from scratch it ended up in the bin........
I always buy the ready to mix packs...I tend to use squires kitchen ones..never had a problem with them and very easy to use...others might be okay with making it from sratch but it didnt work for me....

I make my own pastillage and had been using a recipe involving gelatine but the pastillage always dried so quickly. I now make a version of gumpaste which is excellent and dires just as hard as pastillage - but you get longer to work with it before is forms a crust. It's 1lb of icing sugar made up as normal as royal icing. I use one tablespoon of egg white powder and whisk it up until it's at the soft peak stage. Then you add three tsps of CMC (tylose powder) at which point it gets very thick and is hard to whisk with a machine. So I mix it with a wooden spoon and add more icing sugar if it's too gooey. Leave it overnight in a tight plastic bag with no air. Then when you come to use knead it up with about a tsp of white vegetable fat. It;s very good and I've just made a 30cm tall lighthouse with it - it's very rigid and non-brittle.

Don't ask!!
Seriosuly though I'm doing a three tiered cake (each tier two cakes high) so VERY high. It is blue with curly waves, silver swirls and fish etc on with a 'working' lighthouse on top (with a lit candle in the middle) It's for a wedding on Saturday and I'm having to take it all to Cardiff and assembly it all there. It's for a friend's wedding and I'm getting a free night in a fancy hotel as payment. Will post pics when I have them. Wish me luck!

Wow Emma, I can't wait to see it!! And you're in Cardiff! I would come and meet you if we weren't away for the day. Where are they getting married? I'd be nervous about driving the cake such a long distance. Good luck, I bet it'll be great.

They're getting married in Nash Point lighthouse and having the reception at City Hall in Cardiff. I lived in Cardiff for seven years so it will be very nostalgic for me to go back! Breakfast at Ramon's here I come!
I'm travelling with the cake in it's seperate tiers so should be ok, I'm assembling it once I'm there.
