Hi Chrissy, Yes, you're right, they are called posy picks. Try www.sugarshack.co.uk. They sell them for 30p each. Looking at that site, they're also called flower spikes. newlook.design-a-cake.co.uk/ also sell them but seem to be out of stock. They call them flower holders. Hope this helps! Shianne

most definately i am going to have to control my urges to buy new cutters etc to try, i was making a cake for my mother in law yesterday for her birthday, but she rang to say they are coming next week instead.....as they live long distance, so looks like i have 2 cakes to make for next weekend although hubby says i should not i want to make my own birthday cake, i like to practise and it is good fun, so hope to use the posy pics on one at least.

It's so difficult. Much easier when you buy a little at a time though so it doesn't feel like you're spending a fortune. I'd love to know how much i've spent since starting 4 1/2 months ago. You couldn't freeze the cake you made yesterday? I love practising too and i needed photos for my website and for the pamphlets i'm putting up. I've mostly used dummies because i can reuse them. I got my first order off one of my older leaflets i'd posted around town last week and it's a rugby ball cake which i haven't done before. I'm really looking forward to it though. I also wanted to do one for my birthday (end of Feb) but my children's health visitor just ordered a cake for then so i don't think i'll be doing one for myself either. Oh well, i'm sure we'll find another excuse to make one somewhere along the line!!

wel done you....once people see and taste your cakes..cos taste does matter..the amount of people who say they spent a fortune on a beautiful cake but it tasted dreadful is amazing... It great when you can give them both..It is good to do a few donation cakes to local schools or charities as people see the work and taste it and sometimes they raffle off the cake so win it..You have your card and stickers on your box..and theyre you go free advertising..okay it cost you time and ingredients but nothing works better.. It does take a little time and you will have good and bad months but it is worth it..I did a cake for heartline and also did face painting for them didnt charge anything but all my cards where taken and someone won the cake and all the kids got there faces done...it got me seen which was the whole point..and gave me practise on my painting aswell which was good..
right I will stop now..off to get my brushes etc ready for next week...AAHHHHHHHH I am excited, nervous and you know

That's a brilliant idea, putting the stickers on the box! I never thought of that. Have you made yours yourself? You're going to be really busy by the sounds of things. I'd be so nervous about doing sugar flowers but then again i've only just started doing them on our course. It's lovely seeing the end result though. Rach, you should really try and get a website up and running. I've just want to get this rugby ball cake done and then i can put it on the site and get my posters and business cards printed and let everyone know again. I can't wait to do that. My old posters just advertised children's birthday cakes but i have to make the new one's broader than that, saying all novelty cakes etc. I think i'm going to do what you've done and make a cake at some stage for my local charity shop which they can raffle off over a weekend. That will really be nice. Makes you feel good too. well, good luck with all your upcoming cakes and be sure to let us see them all! Shianne

I also put a separate label on each cake mentioning whether it is rich fruit/madeira/gluten free/diabetic etc. and also the note to:
'Please remove ribbons, decorations and sugar flowers which may be wired and are for display purposes only'
as well as the nut warning - give a bit more coverage in case someone thinks they're edible and chokes (or breaks a tooth!).
Also got very reasonable insurance cover through the British Sugarcraft Guild (check their website) which gives good cover to those of us only doing it on a hobby basis and earning less than £5000pa from it.
Marjorie
Agree Vistaprint are great for cards, stickers etc.
