Hi, can anyone please tell me the best way to store a fruit cake that is too big for a tin? I am making a sugerpaste house for our school fair in December, I have put the marzipan on and then covered with sugerpaste and I am decorating it now and again when I get time, however its too tall to go in a tin, whats the best way to keep it, any advice will be much appreciated, thanks, Julie

Hi Julie, if the cake is covered with marzipan and sugarpaste and is on a board, then there is no need to store it in anything as it should keep perfectly well as it is, you might want to cover it with a cardboard box to stop it getting dusty though. You don't want to put it in anything airtight as it will make your sugarpaste go soft and sticky.
If you want to store a fruit cake before you marzipan and ice it, then kust wrap it in 2 layers of greeseproof paper and 2 layers of tin foil and again, there is no need to put it in a tin

Yes, children always seem to be drawn to cake decorations, I made my brother's wedding cake last month with wired roses, a couple of which I placed loose around the bottom...just about caught my 3 year old nephew before he put one in his mouth and cut himself on the hook! And I'll never forget looking at my daughters christening cake about 5 minutes after the buffet opened and one of the heads had been pulled off the tortoises!
I've currently got 3 fruit cakes nicely wrapped sitting on the dresser in my dining room...I think my husband is getting a bit fed up of my new venture! I've just told him we need a bigger house!
